Safe Deposit - Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I rent a safe deposit box?

It is a convenient place to store items that would be difficult, or impossible, to replace. The two most important features are privacy and security. While many people like to keep valuables at their home in a file cabinet or safe, those places are not as resistant to fire, water, or theft. Also, some insurance companies charge lower premiums on valuables kept in a safe deposit box as opposed to a home.

What should I put in a safe deposit box?

Any personal items that would cause you severe trouble if lost. Important papers to consider putting into your box include insurance policies, wills, birth certificates, mortgages, leases, stocks, bonds, and CDs. Other valuables that may warrant a place are special jewels, medals, collectibles, photographs and negatives.

What should not go in a safe deposit box?

Anything you might need in an emergency, because your Credit Union will be closed on nights, weekends, and holidays. Possible examples: originals of a “power of attorney,” passports, medical care directives, and funeral instructions. Consider giving the originals to your attorney and making copies to go in your safe deposit box or to give to a relative or close friend.

Can I arrange for someone to access my box in an emergency?

Yes. You can jointly rent your box with a spouse, child, or other person who would have unrestricted access to the box. He or she must sign the Credit Union’s rental contract as a joint-renter. We can discuss your options at the time you rent your box.

Are safe deposit boxes protected from fire, flood, or other disasters?

The companies that manufacture safe deposit boxes and the vaults that house the boxes make them highly resistant to fire, flood, heat, earthquakes, tornados, or other disastrous conditions. However, the key word here is “resistant.”

Does NCUA insurance cover the contents of safe deposit boxes if they are damaged or stolen?

No. By law, the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration, a U.S. government agency) only insures deposit accounts at insured institutions. Although you may be putting valuables, including cash and checks, into an area of the Credit Union that has the word "deposit" in its name, these are not deposits under the insurance laws that the Credit Union can use, for example, to make loans to other members. A safe deposit box is strictly a storage space provided by the Credit Union.

Do I have my own key to my safe deposit box?

Yes - the renter of a safe deposit box is presented with two keys for his/her box. Each key should be secured in a safe but separate location. The Credit Union does not have duplicate keys.

What if I lose both keys?

If both keys are lost, we must have a locksmith drill into the lock and install a new lock, and we give the member a new set of keys. The member will be responsible for all expenses involved.

How does a safe deposit box open?

The member retains the keys for his/her box. The box cannot be opened (except by force) unless the member key and the Credit Union's "guard" key are both used. The member's key opens one set of tumblers and the "guard" key opens another set to release the lock. Neither key by itself can unlock the box, thereby giving additional assurance as to the privacy and safety of the contents.

How does the Credit Union verify who has access to my box?

When a member wishes to open his/her box, he/she must sign an admission form so that the signature can be verified for identification against the signature on our records. In addition, all box renters will be asked to provide a valid photo I.D. Members are not allowed at any time to remove their safe deposit box from the safe deposit box area, which is open only during lobby hours.

Do you suggest that I keep a list of everything in my box?

The safe deposit box renter should keep an accurate and current inventory of the contents of the box. The inventory record should be kept in the safe deposit box and in another location.
